Welcome to "Coryule" - Built 1887
Albert P.Emery came from 25 Chapel Street, St Kilda to the new house.
By late 1890 William Kidder Emery occupied the house, followed by
John C Sibthorpe early last century, Wilhelmina Foster in 1908 and
Robert Padmore Greenshield(1915).
The property has been a doctor's residence and medical consulting romms since 1915, the first medical practitioner being
Dr. H. Greenshields. Dr. Hilda Heffernan purchased the property that year. She practiced in partnership with her husband.
Through a remarkable coincidence, we were able to contact Dr. Heffernan's daughter, Mrs. Hilda Rawlinson who resides in
Heidelberg. Mrs. Rawlinson could not tell us why her mother was the sole purchaser of the property, unusual for those times,
but of great interest, is the fact that Dr. Heffernan would have been one of the very few female medical graduates trained
in Australia at that time. Dr. Heffernan purpose build the brick extension on the northern side of the house as medical
consulting rooms, although she and her husband first used what is now one of the front bedrooms as the consulting room and the
front verandah was the waiting room!
Between this time and 1944, a Dr. James Alexander practised here. In 1944, Dr. Ivor Paull purchased this property; he lived
and practised here until 1947. His son Dr. John Paul still lives and practices in Melbourne today and has visited here and
contributed his knowledge of his family's time in residence.
Dr. Dumbrell purchased the property in 1993 from Dr. Edward Perlman who had practised medicine here since 1947, in partnership
with Dr. Clive Salwyn, and was retiring. He resided here until 1950 and moved with his family to his current home in Kew whilst
still consulting from the medical rooms. The residence was then occupied by the practice nursing sister for some years.
